Starting Spiritual Conversations

How do we have spiritual conversations that lead to disciple making relationships?

There are a few things to keep in mind when we are attempting to initiate new disciple making relationships with people.

  1. If you cannot have a conversation, you cannot have a spiritual conversation. - This may seem like common sense, but a lot of evangelism needs to begin with the ability to relate to and talk to other people around everyday concerns and issues. These may include things like: money, family, work, politics, recreation, etc.
  2. If you can have a conversation you can probably have a spiritual conversation - This is because the kingdom of God is not a topic of conversation, but a reality breaking into the world. It effects how we think about almost any topic that comes up in relationship. So, if we are paying attention in conversation, we will probably be able to connect whatever we are discussing at any given time back to our identity as disciples of Jesus. Additionally, with practice, we should be able to do this in ways that do not “high-jack” the conversation or even change the subject, but naturally allow us to speak about our discipleship as it relates to everyday interactions with our friends and neighbors.

Get Started

  1. Make spiritual statements - EXAMPLE : if we’re talking about the economy we could say, “One of the things I am trying to do as a follower of Jesus is worry less, but that’s difficult to do. What do you do that’s helpful to keep from stressing out?”
  2. Ask spiritual questions - EXAMPLE : if we are talking about a family issue we might say to a friend, “It’s important in my faith to pursue reconciliation. Jesus even talks about peace-makers being blessed, and I’ve noticed you are a good peacemaker. Do you have any advice about making peace in this situation?”

Reflection Questions

  2. What spiritual comments or questions might you make in the next conversation about these things?
